Something interesting happened to me last (Friday) night -- well, by this time, it was actually Saturday morning -- and it was also the first time I recall it happening since I started photographing at night nearly a decade ago: I encountered another nighttime photographer!

He said his name was Dave and he was out with his wife and son driving around and taking photos. He was using a Leica M Monochrom and his wife was using a Leica 10 (or maybe it was the other way around?) and he said they were photographing signs, mostly, and neon signs in particular, but also any interesting architecture they stumbled upon, too.

We compared notes for a few minutes and, of course, also talked about our most memorable encounters with homeless people, security guards, and the police. Unlike me, he has a Press Pass, which he said has been helpful at times, but also completely ignored at others. All in all, it was a pleasant encounter and it's nice to know that I'm not alone -- nor crazy! -- for engaging in this genre of photography.

A few minutes later, I also met Gabriel, the owner of an iron fabrication shop located on the corner behind where I was photographing. He was surprised to learn that I wasn't carrying a concealed weapon -- sometimes I do and sometimes I don't <shrugs> -- and warned me to be careful, because I wasn't in the safest of neighborhoods, especially at this time of the day.

We then shook hands and he returned to his all-nighter swapping the engine in one of his service trucks so it could be put back to work in the morning and I headed back to Steve's truck -- he'd joined me with his 4x5 view camera, through which he was photographing with film, of all things! -- where I decided to call it a night, because I'd managed fewer than three hours of sleep the night before and was just starting to feel a bit tired and sleepy. (Alas, despite this promising start, I was still awake until after 5:00 am ... &*#!^! insomnia!)
