I've tried many times, over many years, to photograph this scene. But for various technical reasons, I've never been successful at doing so. The usual problem has been that I can't balance the exposure between the bright neon and dark shadow areas. And even this photo is right on the edge of failure (note the nearly blown-out white neon lettering at the bottom of the sign.)

But it appears camera technology has finally come to my rescue, as the camera body I'm currently using (a 2013-vintage Sony A7R) is able to very nearly capture the full range of lighting that makes up this scene. Or close enough, anyway. (Surprisingly, for my purposes, the original version of this camera, which is the one I'm using, is a better performer overall than its subsequent replacements. Because the type of photography I do falls into a very small and specialized niche, 99.9% of users will consider the changes Sony has made an improvement, whereas, by and large, I found them detrimental. This certainly was the case with the A7RII and also, I suspect, with the recently released A7RIII (and its future replacements), too. As such, there's a good chance I'll be "stuck" using a theoretically obsolete camera for many years to come, albeit happily so...)
