The American Agave is a very interesting plant. Although they are also known as the "Century plant," they typically live for only 10 to 30 years. They reproduce only once in their lives by quickly growing a tall stalk -- sometimes as tall as 25 feet! -- that's full of seeds. It falls over, splits open and distributes the seeds, and the plant then dies.
I spotted this one near my house late Saturday night. I was able to photograph it because the lights of the surrounding houses had been left on, something that doesn't occur very often.
