As anybody who has ever tried will attest, photographing a scene such as this one is actually quite tricky. Because there is so little light available, one cannot afford to leave any photons on the table, so to speak; on the other hand, what photons do exist are concentrated in a few very small areas, so one must carefully choose the exposure length to avoid overexposing the highlights.
The other part of the recipe is post-processing the raw file in order to tease the maximum amount of detail from the shadows, which can be problematic due to the limitations of Sony's lossy, 11+7 bit, raw file compression scheme.
Still, despite the numerous complaints from me and many other photographers about various of Sony's quirky design choices, the fact is their cameras still do the best overall job for my purposes and I mean that without regard to cost, which is certainly saying something....
