Railroad Crossing

Lately, for reasons I don't even remotely begin to understand, a lot of my recent nighttime photos strike me as being much more interesting when processed in color than converted to B&W. The photo above is a good example.

I like it quite a lot. I love the orange-ish glow in the sky (which obviously disappears completely when the photo is converted to B&W), along with the brown-gray tones of the dirt and pavement, and the hints of blue-white on the plastic sheet that's wrapped around the stacked bundles of wood.

Try as I might, though, I just can't make this photo anywhere near as visually interesting in B&W and this isn't the only photo that's turning out this way, either. Boredom certainly could explain my situation, including my sudden (and largely inexplicable) need to start rethinking my choice of camera gear, even though I have been (mostly) happy using the same camera setup for the past 16 months.

But it feels like something else is happening and I have absolutely no idea what it might be.
