Cholla cactus

As part of my "Desert Chaos" project to document the ecosystems that develop around native Palo Verde trees and Cholla cactii, I've been hiking in the desert a lot lately and taking photos as well. While my initial thought was to process these photos in color, I found it to be too garish for my taste and the toned black-and-white approach I use with nighttime photography did not seem to be appropriate, either.

So I stepped back, pondered for a bit, and started experimenting with a hybrid approach, wherein my photos are a combination of both color and black-and-white. When it works, I think it works very well indeed and I'm now happy enough with my initial results to publicly present them here ... I hope you like them!
