Rockin' in Utah

So where did this rock come from, anyway? It clearly isn't made of the same stuff as the even bigger rock it's sitting upon and it's much too large and heavy, and located too far up what is a fairly steep slope, to have been lifted into place by humans...

Also notice the interesting coral-like pattern that forms over time as the rock is worked over by the rain and ice (which is what that the greyish stuff visible on the front of the rock is). I should make a point of keeping an eye on it over the next few years and watch how the erosion progresses.

UPDATE: My travel partner, who has much more experience in these matters than I, has pointed out to me that this rock fell from the capstone layer higher up the formation and sent me a photo as proof. So, mystery = solved. P.S.: He also broke the news to me that there is no Santa Claus... :-(
